She is certified in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and also certified to provide supervision to therapists working towards their certification in EFT. (EFT is one of the most researched methods of couples therapy, known for creating safety and structure needed to effectively resolve conflict.) Her training also includes The Gottman Method for Couples and Internal Family Systems. She enjoys helping people to feel happier and more empowered, to be more compassionate with themselves and others, and to have more satisfying and fulfilling relationships.
I help couples understand their disagreements and better share their feelings and needs in ways that bring them closer together instead of farther apart. In therapy, we look at each person’s perceptions, feelings, behaviors, needs and their impact on the other person.
Whether in individual or couple therapy, I help people understand feelings, perspectives, and behaviors that are interfering with the kind of life they want to have. I also help people explore other ways of thinking about themselves and others help find ways to expand the choices they have. I create a structure in therapy that lets you unhook from burdensome habits or states-of-mind associated with negative or uncomfortable emotions and create positive mental habits to make your life or relationship run more smoothly. Through this process, people begin to feel better about themselves and have the relationships they want to have. I have led several workshops and assisted in trainings for other professionals on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy. I have two published articles on compassion and founded The Institute for the Enhancement of Compassion in Human Animals. I am the co-Director of the Education Committee and on the Board of Directors for The Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Workers.
In 1998, I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Catholic University. I have worked with foster care children and foster parents and also with people with severe and persistent mental illness.
I have greatly benefited from therapy. I have worked through my own depression, anxiety, feeling stuck, and difficulties with relationships. I am now the happiest I have ever been and, most of the time, feel like I can get through the challenges of life. I continue to grow and learn about myself and feel able to make choices that help me create the life that works for me.
