I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Certified Imago Relationship Therapist, and a certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist. Since 2002, I have worked in mental health and psychotherapy in a variety of settings, and have trained closely with nationally renowned experts in the fields of individual and couples psychotherapy.Schedule Your Consultation
I can help you build your own ability to change emotional states or behaviors that seem highly resistant to change. After noticing how many of my clients struggled to get better with traditional talk therapy—which typically relies on cognitive and rational-based interventions—I devoted many years to studying and fine-tuning the method that I now use, based on a method that systematically uses mindfulness, called Internal Family Systems (IFS).

IFS is an evidenced-based approach that is scientifically shown to effectively treat anxiety, panic, phobias, and improve a variety of general health conditions.
I’ll teach you to pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations and view them more neutrally, without assigning an emotional value that they are strongly positive or negative. In fact, we’ll learn that it’s possible—and more productive—to befriend and get to know, rather than fight or exile, the most unwanted aspects of our personality.
Together, we’ll create a laboratory where you can safely resolve longstanding inner conflicts that cause emotional pain, unwanted behaviors, or disruption to your relationships.
I’ll incorporate mindfulness into our sessions in a systematic way with you that’s highly efficient at getting to the root of issues, without recycling old beliefs that have outlasted their usefulness in your life. In my opinion, this is the biggest limitation of cognitive or analytical therapies.
For some people, it’s possible for us to use “inductive” techniques that are highly focused. It can help you achieve a deeply relaxed and creative state, from which you can see your presenting problems or symptoms through a radically new lens. To some people this process feels the same as hypnosis, but our work remains grounded in the evidence-based practices of mind-body medicine and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR).
These focused sessions are especially helpful for:

I am a master couples therapist with significant post-graduate training in attachment-based, emotion-focused couples therapy. In addition to my clinical work with couples to restore intimacy, improve communication, and recover from infidelity, I teach post-graduate continuing education courses to other couples therapists. I am the author of two books and one multi-media, home-study course on the subject of relationship improvement. I regularly offer this free webinar: How to Resolve Any Communication Issue. I highly recommend taking this webinar and considering joining me in my next Mindful Marriage live course (below), before we work together. Couples who complete this course seem to clearly have better outcomes and accelerated progress in therapy or with gridlocked issues.

My graduate degree in Clinical Social Work is from Virginia Commonwealth University and I hold an undergraduate degree in religious studies.
Out-of-the-classroom training is important for any therapist to be effective, and I have high standards for maintaining post-graduate, experiential training and professional review of my work throughout the year. I also think it is important that you know I am committed to maintain my own personal discipline of sitting regularly my own therapist. It always has the effect of stretching me, showing me how hard it really is to take the risk of investing in your own personal growth—and how deeply rewarding it is to stick with it.
I also consider myself fortunate to be married to someone who has been willing to labor with me—in the trenches of marriage therapy at times—to shape our relationship when it needs shaping and rest when it’s time to rest.
More than any degree or gold-star training ever will, the continuous act of attempting to love and be loved by one person—while raising children to love and thrive—challenges all of my best faculties and adds a fine (and humbling) point to so many of the wellness tools that I offer to others. All of it yields in me a steady crop of confidence, compassion, and hope for others on their own path of personal growth.
I work with regularly with people from around the world. If you’re not able to come in for an office visit, I’m happy to consult with you over the phone or skype. Please know that phone sessions are technically “coaching” or “consultation” and cannot be considered psychotherapy–therefore phone sessions are not subject to insurance reimbursement.

Because we are licensed as professional social workers and counselors, our professional services do qualify for patient reimbursement under most insurance plans. Coverage varies widely from policy to policy, so you may want to review your benefits to determine your expected reimbursement.
Since the scheduling of an appointment involves the reservation of times specifically for you, a minimum of 48 hours notice is required for rescheduling or canceling an appointment. Unless we reach a different agreement, the full fee will be charged for sessions missed without such notification. Most insurance companies do not reimburse for missed sessions.
In inclimate weather the cancellation policy is in effect unless the federal government is closed.
