I fully understand how some people may have reservations about seeking therapy. I am from a society that reserves counseling for church leaders or family members, and I recognize that some people have negative experiences in therapy. I create a supportive environment, a “holding space,” where you can feel a sense of trust and safety. I believe that once this trusting relationship has been created the healing work can begin and you’ll be able to grow and build confidence in yourself. I’m great at tapping into the qualities you were born with. Your time with me is an opportunity to learn life lessons needed to create and maintain a quality life.
I was born and raised in Uganda. I grew up in the tumultuous period in the early 80s and 90s when HIV/AIDS was killing people. As an affected person whose parents happened to be victims of this deadly disease, I developed compassion for the young orphans left behind and always wondered how I could be of assistance. This inspired me to study social work at Uganda Christian University where I earned a Bachelors of Social Work. Upon my graduation, I volunteered with different organizations that helped HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons while also working as a teaching assistant at the same university. I have always used my personal story to help people wherever I meet them.
My immigration to America was inspired by two things. First was my tour in Iraq in 2008 where I worked alongside the U.S military forces during the Iraq war. I was touched by the stories of how the wars were affecting the servicemembers and thought about how best to help. Secondly, the persecution of the LGBTQIA people in Uganda was at its peak in 2008-2009 and I could not withstand the unfounded, ruthless, and public attacks against my character. I decided to flee the country and later brought my family. I strongly believe in the sanctity of life and everyone needs an equal chance to live a fulfilled life.
I joined the United States Army in 2012 as a combat medic, to serve and defend the country that gave me the freedom that I badly needed. It also fulfilled my goal of helping service members who deal with the traumatic experiences of their job. Following this enlistment, I enrolled in a graduate social work program at the University of Southern California where I graduated with a Master of Social Work in 2015.
Following graduation, I was hired by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation where I completed my social work internship for licensure. Due to my constant quest for knowledge, I enrolled in a post graduate psychology program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology where I earned a degree of Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). I’m currently registered as a Psychology Associate in the State of Maryland earning hours towards licensure.
Experience is the best teacher. Every experience I have had has been a learning one. This life experience is what I bring in the therapy holding environment—full of compassion and an understanding. I do not have answers, however, I encourage my clients to be open to different perspectives and that is how they enrich their life experiences.
